1999 Assembly RESOLUTION 19

AR19,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of George Reedy.

AR19,1,4 Whereas, George Reedy was born on August 5, 1917, in East Chicago, Indiana, and died on March 21, 1999, at St. John's Nursing Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 81; and

AR19,1,6 Whereas, Mr. Reedy graduated with a Bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1938; and

AR19,1,8 Whereas, after graduation, Mr. Reedy joined the Washington Bureau of The United Press as a reporter covering Congress and government agencies; and

AR19,1,10 Whereas, he served in the Army Air Forces during World War II as a radar intelligence officer and participated in bombing missions in the Pacific theatre; and

AR19,1,13 Whereas, Mr. Reedy served as a special assistant to Vice President Lyndon Johnson, as press secretary after Johnson became President in 1964, and as a special consultant to the White House on labor matters in 1968; and

AR19,2,3 Whereas, he was selected to be the dean of the Marquette University School of Journalism in 1971, served as the Neiman Professor of Journalism, resigned the deanship in 1977 to concentrate on full-time teaching and research, but retained the academic chair until 1990 when he became professor emeritus, and continued to teach and write at Marquette University until 1996; and

AR19,2,6 Whereas, Mr. Reedy wrote 7 books, including a 1982 memoir of President Johnson, in which he warned that the presidency was endangered if American leaders become insulated and isolated from the people; and

AR19,2,10 Whereas, Mr. Reedy was a passionate and literate defender of the watchdog role of the media in modern society, a popular and well-loved teacher, and touched the lives of many through his work as a reporter, author and lecturer; now, therefore, be it

AR19,2,14 Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin assembly commend Mr. George Reedy's many years of devoted public service, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further

AR19,2,17 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this resolution to Mr. Reedy's sons, Michael Reedy, of Stoughton, WI, and William Reedy, of Moretown, VT.
