SB306,1,2 1An Act to create 20.255 (3) (eh) and 115.28 (42) of the statutes; relating to:
2establishing a geographical education fund and making an appropriation.

This bill requires the department of public instruction (DPI) to enter into an
agreement with the National Geographic Society Education Foundation to establish
the Wisconsin geographical education fund to award grants and to support programs
to improve geographical education in Wisconsin. Among other things, this
agreement must require both DPI and the foundation to make an initial grant of
$500,000 to the fund and the foundation to submit to DPI an annual, financial audit
statement of the fund.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB306, s. 1 3Section 1. 20.005 (3) (schedule) of the statutes: at the appropriate place, insert
4the following amounts for the purposes indicated: - See PDF for table PDF
SB306, s. 2 1Section 2. 20.255 (3) (eh) of the statutes is created to read:
SB306,2,42 20.255 (3) (eh) Wisconsin geographical education fund. The amounts in the
3schedule for the Wisconsin geographical education fund under s. 115.28 (42). No
4moneys may be encumbered under this paragraph after June 30, 2001.
SB306, s. 3 5Section 3. 115.28 (42) of the statutes is created to read:
SB306,2,96 115.28 (42) Wisconsin Geographical education fund. Enter into an
7agreement with the National Geographic Society Education Foundation to establish
8the Wisconsin geographical education fund. The agreement shall require all of the
9following:
SB306,2,1110 (a) That the National Geographic Society Education Foundation manage the
11Wisconsin geographical education fund.
SB306,2,1412 (b) That the department award an initial grant of $500,000 from the
13appropriation under s. 20.255 (3) (eh) to the Wisconsin geographical education fund,
14to be matched by a grant from the National Geographic Society.
SB306,2,1715 (c) That income and appreciation from the Wisconsin geographical education
16fund be used to award grants and support programs to improve geographical
17education in this state.

1(d) That the National Geographic Society Education Foundation annually
2submit to the department an audited financial statement of the Wisconsin
3geographical education fund prepared by an independent auditor and a report listing
4the names of grant recipients and the amounts and purposes of awards and other
5expenditures made from the Wisconsin geographical education fund.
SB306,3,96 (e) That, if the Wisconsin geographical education fund is dissolved, the
7National Geographic Society Education Foundation shall return to the department
8the department's original grant under this subsection and any accumulated and
9unexpended income thereon.
