SJR25,1,1 1Relating to: declaring November as Diabetes Awareness Month.
SJR25,1,22 Whereas, diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States; and
SJR25,1,5 3Whereas, diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness, and
4individuals with diabetes are at a much greater risk of developing kidney disease,
5heart disease and stroke; and
SJR25,1,8 6Whereas, pregnant women with diabetes face a greater chance of delivering a
7baby with birth defects, and the newborn is 2 to 3 times more likely to die within the
8first month; and
SJR25,1,119 Whereas, health care and other costs directly resulting from diabetes are
10extremely high, about $92 billion annually, making diabetes one of the most costly
11health problems in America today; and
SJR25,1,1412 Whereas, approximately 2,200 people are diagnosed daily with diabetes, while
13an alarming 5.4 million people nationwide are not yet aware they have the disease;

1Whereas, diabetes self-management and awareness about the disease are
2necessary elements in keeping diabetes under control and reducing complications;
3and
SJR25,2,54 Whereas, individuals with diabetes, and their families, make a conscious effort
5each day to manage a healthy lifestyle and to maintain their overall health; and
SJR25,2,86 Whereas, through increased knowledge of diabetes and improved patient care
7of those diagnosed, the lives of individuals living with a disease that has no cure can
8be improved; now, therefore, be it
SJR25,2,11 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
10the state of Wisconsin designates November of each year as "Diabetes Awareness
11Month".
