AB612,1,2 1An Act to amend 66.0137 (5) of the statutes; relating to: allowing a local
2governmental unit to provide health insurance to its retired officers.

Under current law, the state or a local governmental unit (includes a city,
village, town, county, school district, sewerage district, and drainage district) may
pay the premiums for hospital, surgical, and other health and accident insurance
and life insurance for employees and officers and their spouses and dependent
children. A local governmental unit may also pay the premiums for hospital and
surgical care for its retired employees. Also under current law, 1st class cities
(presently only Milwaukee) may pay the premiums for general hospital, surgical,
and group insurance for both active and retired city officers and city employees and
their respective dependents.
This bill authorizes a local governmental unit to pay the premiums for hospital
and surgical care for its retired officers.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

166.0137 (5) Hospital, accident and life insurance. The state or a local
2governmental unit may provide for the payment of premiums for hospital, surgical
3and other health and accident insurance and life insurance for employees and
4officers and their spouses and dependent children. A local governmental unit may
5also provide for the payment of premiums for hospital and surgical care for its retired
6employees and officers. In addition, a local governmental unit may, by ordinance or
7resolution, elect to offer to all of its employees a health care coverage plan through
8a program offered by the group insurance board under ch. 40. A local governmental
9unit that elects to participate under s. 40.51 (7) is subject to the applicable sections
10of ch. 40 instead of this subsection.
