AJR103,1,32 Whereas, John D. Powell has been a Capitol reporter for Wisconsin Public
3Radio, where he has covered state politics full-time since 1977; and
AJR103,1,54 Whereas, a Richland Center native, John debuted on radio as a disc jockey in
5his teens, entertaining listeners on weekend shifts; and
AJR103,1,86 Whereas, after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he
7earned a master's degree in history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before
8joining Wisconsin Public Radio in 1972; and
AJR103,1,109 Whereas, before John began a full-time career as a Capitol reporter, he covered
10state government as part of a general-assignment reporting beat for 5-years; and
AJR103,1,1311 Whereas, during his time at the State Capitol, John Powell has covered 14
12legislative sessions and 6 governors, along with numerous assembly speakers,
13senate presidents, majority and minority leaders, and other legislators; and
AJR103,1,1514 Whereas, John's experience at the State Capitol has allowed him to report
15meaningful perspectives on the news; and

1Whereas, John has insisted that his long stint on the Capitol beat has not
2turned him into a jaded reporter; and
AJR103,2,43 Whereas, John Powell has ably upheld the long tradition of fine State Capitol
4reporting and has won the esteem of his colleagues in the media; and
AJR103,2,65 Whereas, Wisconsin Public Radio listeners recognize John Powell's distinctive
6voice far more than his face; and
AJR103,2,87 Whereas, in particular, lawmakers are ardent listeners to Wisconsin Public
8Radio broadcasts while they are commuting to and from Madison; and
AJR103,2,109 Whereas, after 29 years of reporting for Wisconsin Public Radio, the State
10Capitol will not be the same without John Powell; now, therefore, be it
AJR103,2,13 11Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That: the members of the
12Wisconsin legislature salute John D. Powell on his retirement from Wisconsin Public
13Radio; and, be it further
AJR103,2,16 14Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
15resolution to John D. Powell, along with the good wishes of the legislature for a long,
16healthy, and active retirement.
