SJR36,1,2 1Relating to: urging the U.S. and Canadian governments to prohibit diversion of
2Great Lakes water.
SJR36,1,63 Whereas, the water within the Great Lakes basin is a precious natural resource
4that needs to be carefully and cooperatively managed and protected to meet existing
5and future water needs within the Great Lakes basin and the Canadian provinces;
6and
SJR36,1,97 Whereas, any new diversions of Great Lakes waters for use outside of the Great
8Lakes basin will have significant adverse effects on the environment, economy, and
9welfare of the Great Lakes region; and
SJR36,1,1110 Whereas, the government of Canada has considered authorizing a company to
11divert water from the Great Lakes to sell in Asia; and
SJR36,2,212 Whereas, as trustees of the Great Lakes basin's natural resources, the U.S.
13government, the Canadian government, the Great Lakes states, municipalities, and
14other local governments, and Canadian provinces have a shared duty to protect,

1conserve, and manage the waters of the Great Lakes basin for the future use, benefit,
2and enjoyment of all of their citizens; now, therefore, be it
SJR36,2,8 3Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
4Wisconsin legislature call upon the Congress and President of the United States and
5the Parliament and Prime Minister of Canada to act to prohibit the sale or diversion
6of Great Lakes water to foreign countries and to businesses, corporations,
7individuals, states, municipalities, and other local governments located outside of
8the Great Lakes basin; and, be it further
SJR36,2,11 9Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
10resolution to each member of the Wisconsin congressional delegation, to the
11President of the United States, and to the Prime Minister of Canada.
