SJR52,1,32 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller was born on January 13, 1947, in New York,
3New York and passed away on November 4, 2001, in Milwaukee; and
SJR52,1,84 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller received an associate degree in corrections
5administration from Manhattan Community College, a bachelor's degree from the
6John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1968, a master's degree in social work from
7New York University in 1970, and a law degree from the University of
8Wisconsin-Madison Law School in 1974; and
SJR52,1,119 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller was in private law practice from 1974 to 1981
10when he joined the Milwaukee County Institutions and Departments as principal
11assistant corporation counsel and legal counsel; and
SJR52,2,212 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller was named a Milwaukee County court
13commissioner in 1984, appointed to the municipal court in Milwaukee in 1988 by the
14Milwaukee common council, and appointed to the Milwaukee County circuit court

1by Governor Tommy Thompson in 1992 from which he retired in September 2001;
2and
SJR52,2,63 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller was very active in the community as a
4member of the NAACP and the Sherman Park Community Association and served
5on a number of boards including Pius XI High School, Community Brainstorming
6Conference, and St. Thomas More Lawyer's Society; and
SJR52,2,107 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller has been a trailblazer his entire life: as a
82nd-year law student he became the first African-American elected president of the
9Student Bar Association and was one of the first African-Americans to run for the
10Wisconsin supreme court; and
SJR52,2,1211 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller mentored and encouraged other
12African-American attorneys to become members of the bench; and
SJR52,2,1813 Whereas, Judge Stanley A. Miller's unique and insightful judicial philosophy
14set him apart from many of his colleagues, in that he consistently "stressed
15prevention in dealing with crime and voiced his concern about the social
16environment that is allowing an increasing number of African-American youth to
17become caught in the web of crime and the criminal justice system"; now, therefore,
18be it
SJR52,2,22 19Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
20Wisconsin legislature commend the life of Stanley A. Miller as a thoughtful,
21compassionate jurist, mourn his passing, and extend their condolences to his family
22and friends; and, be it further
SJR52,3,2 23Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
24resolution to Judge Stanley A. Miller's wife, Barbara Holzmann, to his children,
25Stanley Miller II, Steven Miller, and Joshua Holzmann, all of Milwaukee; to his

1mother, Wilhelmina Miller; to his sister, Beverly; and to his brothers, Ron Miller and
2Raymond Miller, all of New York City.
