SJR53,1,32 Whereas, Frederick F. Kaftan was born on August 25, 1916, in Green Bay,
3Wisconsin, and died on November 9, 2001; and
SJR53,1,64 Whereas, Mr. Kaftan graduated from the Green Bay public schools and entered
5the University of Wisconsin where he earned a LL.B in 1940 from the law school and
6was awarded the Order of the Coif for academic achievement; and
SJR53,1,87 Whereas, during his time at the University of Wisconsin, Mr. Kaftan was also
8a Big Ten fencing champion for 2 years; and
SJR53,1,109 Whereas, on November 18, 1938, he was united in marriage to Virginia Kelly;
10and
SJR53,1,1211 Whereas, Mr. Kaftan served his country as a lieutenant with the Pacific Fleet
12in the U.S. navy during World War II; and
SJR53,1,1413 Whereas, after World War II, Mr. Kaftan practiced law for 40 years in the Green
14Bay area with his father and brothers as part of the Kaftan Law Firm; and

1Whereas, Mr. Kaftan was elected to the Wisconsin senate in 1948 and served
2in the 1949 and 1951 sessions; and
SJR53,2,43 Whereas, he was a member of the committee on judiciary while serving in the
4senate; and
SJR53,2,75 Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, he was involved with
6environmental issues, particularly those pertaining to the Fox and Wolf rivers; now,
7therefore, be it
SJR53,2,11 8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
9Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Frederick F. Kaftan
10contributed to this state, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their
11condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
SJR53,2,17 12Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
13resolution to Mr. Kaftan's daughters, Mary (Richard) Zellner, Evergreen, Colorado,
14Patricia (David) Wouters, Ledgeview, Wisconsin, and Colleen (Peter Fitts) Kaftan,
15Providence, Rhode Island; his sons, William (Sandra) Kaftan, Riverside, California,
16and John (Georgia) Kaftan, Ledgeview, Wisconsin; his brother, Arthur Kaftan, De
17Pere, Wisconsin; and his sister, Elizabeth Muench-Kirschling, Madison, Wisconsin.
