SJR7,1,32 Whereas, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of nonskin
3cancer and the 2nd-leading cause of cancer-related death among men; and
SJR7,1,74 Whereas, according to statistical data supplied by the American Cancer
5Society, there will be an estimated 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer nationally
6in the year 2000, and there will be an estimated 31,900 deaths from prostate cancer
7in this same year; and
SJR7,1,108 Whereas, nationally the number of deaths from prostate cancer has more than
9doubled over the past 30 years, killing 15,173 men in 1962 and an estimated 31,900
10men in the year 2000; and
SJR7,1,1211 Whereas, about 25% of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65,
12during their prime years at work; and
SJR7,1,1413 Whereas, at any age, deaths due to prostate cancer devastate families, through
14loss of income, partnership, and support; and

1Whereas, prostate cancer leaves too many parents, women, children, and
2friends without a man whom they love; and
SJR7,2,53 Whereas, prostate cancer has accounted, on average, for 15% of the nation's
4cancer burden and 15% of male cancer deaths, yet it has received, on average, only
5about 5% of the funds that this nation commits to cancer research; and
SJR7,2,86 Whereas, research suggests that men could reduce their risk of prostate cancer
7mortality if they would follow recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines,
8including examination by a health care provider; and
SJR7,2,109 Whereas, increased awareness and use of early detection practices by men are
10essential to controlling prostate cancer; now, therefore, be it
SJR7,2,15 11Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
12the state of Wisconsin hereby proclaims the month of September as "Prostate Cancer
13Awareness Month" in the state of Wisconsin and urges all men to become aware of
14their own risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health care providers about prostate
15cancer, and, whenever appropriate, be screened for the disease.
