SR11,1,1 1Relating to: the 27th year of military occupation of Cyprus.
SR11,1,32 Whereas, the Republic of Cyprus has been divided and occupied by foreign
3forces since 1974, in violation of United Nations' resolutions; and
SR11,1,64 Whereas, the international community and the U.S. government have
5repeatedly called for the withdrawal of all foreign military forces from the territory
6of Cyprus; and
SR11,1,97 Whereas, there are internationally acceptable means to resolve the situation
8in Cyprus, including demilitarization and the establishment of a multinational force
9to ensure the security of both communities in Cyprus; and
SR11,1,1310 Whereas, a peaceful, just, and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem would
11greatly benefit security, as well as the political, economic, and social well-being of
12all Cypriots, while contributing to improve relations between Greece and Turkey;

1Whereas, the United Nations has repeatedly stated the parameters for such a
2solution, most recently in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1217,
3which was adopted on December 22, 1998, with United States support; and
SR11,2,84 Whereas, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1218 adopted on
5December 22, 1998, calls for reduction of tensions in the island, through a staged
6process aimed at a limited and then substantially reduced level of all troops and
7armaments in Cyprus, ultimately leading to the demilitarization of the Republic of
8Cyprus; and
SR11,2,119 Whereas, President Bush wholeheartedly supported resolution 1218 and
10committed himself to taking all necessary steps to support a sustained effort to
11implement it; now, therefore, be it
SR11,2,16 12Resolved by the senate, That the members of the Wisconsin senate endorse
13President Bush's commitment to undertake significant efforts in order to promote
14substantial progress towards a solution of the Cyprus problem in 2001, so that all in
15Cyprus may enjoy rights and freedoms regardless of their ethnic origins; and, be it
16further
SR11,2,21 17Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to
18the president and secretary of the U.S. senate, to the speaker and clerk of the U.S.
19house of representatives, and to each member of the congressional delegation from
20this state attesting the adoption of this resolution by the 2001 senate of the state of
21Wisconsin.
