SJR60,1,3 1Relating to: commending Professor Bryant Browne and the University of
2Wisconsin-Stevens Point on receipt of a patent for a device used to test gases
3in groundwater and surface water.
SJR60,1,74 Whereas, Bryant Browne, assistant professor of soils at the University of
5Wisconsin-Stevens Point, College of Natural Resources, invented a device for testing
6gases in groundwater and surface water that substantially simplifies the process for
7testing and allows scientists to test for multiple gases at the same time; and
SJR60,1,108 Whereas, Professor Browne's invention has multiple beneficial uses, including:
9monitoring water quality; measuring emissions of global warming gases that enter
10streams; and, potentially, removing toxic gases from groundwater supplies; and
SJR60,1,1311 Whereas, Professor Browne's patent may be licensed to a company for
12production of testing devices, and as such is a great example of how research may be
13commercialized into a product that generates income for the university; and
SJR60,1,1514 Whereas, Professor Browne's patent is only the second patent that the
15University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been awarded in the last six years; and

1Whereas, Professor Browne is an associate professor at the UW-Stevens Point
2College of Natural Resources, where he teaches water chemistry and soil physics;
3and
SJR60,2,54 Whereas, Bryant Browne was awarded the UWSP Excellence in Teaching
5Award in 1996; and
SJR60,2,86 Whereas, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural
7Resources is a nationally recognized educational and research program; now,
8therefore, be it
SJR60,2,12 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature commend Professor Bryant Browne and the University of
11Wisconsin-Stevens Point for Professor Browne's contribution to scientific knowledge
12and betterment of the environment; and, be it further
SJR60,2,15 13Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
14resolution to Professor Browne and to the chancellor of the University of
15Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
