AJR107,1,42 Whereas, Sergeant Travis Van Zoest was born on January 31, 1985, in Madison,
3Wisconsin, and died on June 6, 2006, while conducting combat operations in
4Afghanistan; and
AJR107,1,85 Whereas, Sergeant Van Zoest attended Westside and Royal Oaks elementary
6schools in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, graduated from Century High School in Bismarck,
7North Dakota, in May 2003, and attended Bismarck State College and Minot State
8University; and
AJR107,1,129 Whereas, Sergeant Van Zoest was enlisted in the Army National Guard as a
10private (E-2) on February 8, 2002, in E Battery of the 1st of the 188th Air Defense
11Artillery, North Dakota Army National Guard, as a Man Portable Air Defense
12System (MANPADS) crewmember; and
AJR107,2,413 Whereas, Sergeant Van Zoest received numerous commendations for his
14exemplary service to his country including, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart,
15the Good Conduct Medal, the Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the

1National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War
2on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the North Dakota
3Legion of Merit, the Army Combat Action Badge, and the Expert Marksman Badge;
4and
AJR107,2,75 Whereas, Sergeant Van Zoest enjoyed his studies in chemical engineering and
6business, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family in both Wisconsin
7and North Dakota; and
AJR107,2,98 Whereas, Sergeant Van Zoest made the ultimate sacrifice to his country while
9protecting our freedom and way of life in Operation Enduring Freedom; and
AJR107,2,1110 Whereas, Sergeant Van Zoest will always be remembered for his bravery and
11courage and will never be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
AJR107,2,14 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring That the members of the
13Wisconsin legislature commend the life of Sergeant Travis Van Zoest, express sorrow
14at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
AJR107,2,18 15Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
16resolution to Sergeant Van Zoest's father and stepmother, Ben and Deborah Van
17Zoest of Dane, Wisconsin, and to his brother, Derrick Van Zoest of Bismarck, North
18Dakota.
