AJR35,1,33 Whereas, in 1880 the Salvation Army came to the United States; and
AJR35,1,64 Whereas, by 1889 the Salvation Army established a command post in a small
5storefront on Milwaukee's West Water Street under Captain Samuel Neil and his
6wife; and
AJR35,1,8 7Whereas, over the next century the Salvation Army embarked on a mission of
8service whereby:
AJR35,1,99 In 1893 the first "Red Kettle" drive was instituted;
AJR35,1,10 10In 1903 a home for men was established and the first thrift store opened;
AJR35,1,1211 In 1922 the Booth Home and Hospital for unwed mothers was founded to
12provide shelter with a home-like atmosphere to young women;
AJR35,1,14 13In 1925 Army Lake Camp was opened near East Troy, offering a summer camp
14experience to hundreds statewide;
AJR35,1,15 15In 1932 Salvation Army soup kitchens fed the hungry during the Depression;

1In 1935 the Salvation Army began its first toy distribution;
AJR35,2,3 2In 1941 the Salvation Army assisted servicemen and women during WWII and
3helped organize the USO;
AJR35,2,54 In 1953 the Salvation Army established an Adult Rehabilitation Center to
5serve destitute, homeless men;
AJR35,2,7 6In 1984 the Salvation Army joined together with Health Care for the Homeless;

AJR35,2,9 8In 1998 the Salvation Army opened the Winterstar Transitional Housing
9Program; and
AJR35,2,15 10Whereas, the Salvation Army has established community centers in Appleton,
11Beloit, Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Janesville, Kenosha, La Crosse,
12Madison, Manitowoc, Marinette, Milwaukee, Oak Creek, Oshkosh, Racine,
13Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Superior, Waukesha, and Wausau providing many
14outreach programs that serve thousands of people throughout the state; now,
15therefore, be it
AJR35,2,19 16Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
17legislature commemorates 125 years of the Salvation Army in the United States and
18116 years in Wisconsin by proclaiming May 8 to 14, 2005, as Salvation Army Week
19in the state of Wisconsin.
