AJR81,1,42 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer was born October 28, 1980, in Red Wing, Minnesota,
3to parents Larry and Peggy Hoyer, and died March 10, 2004, in the service of his
4country, in Ba'Quba, Iraq, when his convoy was attacked by an explosive device; and
AJR81,1,75 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer served with distinction, honor, and the respect of his
6fellow soldiers as a member of the 652nd Engineer Company, U.S. Army Reserve,
7based in his hometown of Ellsworth, Wisconsin; and
AJR81,1,118 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer received several commendations for his exemplary
9service to his country, including the Army Service Medal, Army Reserve Component
10Achievement Medal, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart, in addition to being promoted
11to the rank of Specialist 4th Class; and
AJR81,1,1412 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer kept in contact with 6th-grade students at
13Ellsworth Middle School during his service in Iraq, giving them a unique insight into
14Operation Iraqi Freedom and the life of a soldier on active duty; and

1Whereas, Specialist Hoyer was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in
2Beldenville, Wisconsin; and
AJR81,2,53 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1999 and
4entered the U.S. Army Reserve upon enrolling at Vermillion Community College in
5Ely, Minnesota, where he studied wildlife management; and
AJR81,2,86 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer made the ultimate sacrifice for his country to protect
7our freedom and way of life, while advancing the blessing of freedom and democracy
8to the Iraqi people; and
AJR81,2,119 Whereas, Specialist Hoyer will always be remembered for his bravery, courage,
10and as a "creative, inspirational leader," who served his country with pride and
11whose sacrifice shall never be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
AJR81,2,15 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
13Wisconsin legislature honor Specialist Bert Edward Hoyer for his dedication to and
14sacrifice for our country and express their heartfelt sorrow over the loss of his life and
15extend their condolences to his family and friends and, be it further
AJR81,2,20 16Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
17resolution to Specialist Hoyer's parents, Larry and Peggy Hoyer; brother Darryl
18Hoyer; sister Annie Hoyer; maternal grandmother, Florence Kline; paternal
19grandparents, John and Donna Hoyer; and his paternal great-grandmother, Edith
20Johnson.
