SJR26,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming June 7 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
SJR26,1,82 Whereas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Program
3of Cancer Registries verifies that, in 1998, prostate cancer accounted for 28 percent
4of all new cancer cases among Wisconsin males; 3,348 new cases of invasive prostate
5cancer were reported to the Wisconsin Cancer Reporting System; the 1998 Wisconsin
6age-adjusted incidence rate for prostate cancer was 122 per 100,000 males; and
7prostate cancer caused 13 percent of male cancer deaths in Wisconsin, 2nd only to
8lung cancer; and
SJR26,1,129 Whereas, reflecting the general trend in the population toward increased
10longevity, the number of men afflicted with prostate cancer is rapidly increasing, and
11currently 98 percent of prostate cancers in Wisconsin occur among males 50 years
12of age and older; and
SJR26,1,1513 Whereas, according to the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers
14for Disease Control and Prevention, the estimated number of deaths in Wisconsin
15from prostate cancer in 2005 will be 530, and nationally will be 30,350; and

1Whereas, risk factors for prostate cancer include age, race, family history,
2high-fat diet, and nationality; and
SJR26,2,53 Whereas, research suggests that low-fat diets, consuming a variety of fruits
4and vegetables, vitamin E supplements, and hormone suppression help reduce the
5risk of prostate cancer; and
SJR26,2,76 Whereas, every man aged 50 years and older should discuss prostate cancer
7screening options or results with his doctor; now, therefore, be it
SJR26,2,11 8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
9legislature proclaims June 7 to be Prostate Cancer Awareness Day in Wisconsin, and
10urges all male citizens to be educated about prostate cancer so as to combat this
11disease.
