2States Marine Corps who lost his life during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
SJR42,1,63 Whereas, Lance Corporal John Mattek Jr. was born on September 12, 1980, in
4Antigo, Wisconsin, and died on June 13, 2005, as a result of injuries suffered when
5a roadside bomb exploded outside of his Humvee as part of combat operations in Al
6Anbar Province, Iraq; and
SJR42,1,107 Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek was a member of the United States Marine
8Corps, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team-2,
92nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, out of Camp Lejeune, North
10Carolina; and
SJR42,1,1311 Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek was a 1999 graduate of Antigo High School,
12where he served as class president his freshman, sophomore, and senior years, was
13the student council president, and participated in football, wrestling, and track; and
SJR42,1,1514 Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek attended the University of
15Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he played football and rugby; and

1Whereas, after the war in Iraq broke out in March 2003, he enlisted in the
2United States Marine Corps so he could serve his country; and
SJR42,2,43 Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek provided faithful and honorable service to the
4people of the state of Wisconsin and the people of the United States; and
SJR42,2,65 Whereas, the people of Wisconsin mourn the death of Lance Corporal Mattek;
6and
SJR42,2,87 Whereas, Lance Corporal Mattek was laid to rest on June 20, 2005, at the St.
8Wencel's Catholic Church Cemetery in Neva; now, therefore, be it
SJR42,2,12 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
10the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Lance Corporal John
11Mattek Jr. and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues;
12and, be it further
SJR42,2,17 13Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
14resolution to Lance Corporal Mattek's parents, John and Marsha Mattek of
15Deerbrook; sisters, Jill Mattek of Deerbrook and Katie Devore of Bryant; brother,
16Matt Mattek of Deerbrook; paternal grandmother, Phyllis Mattek of Deerbrook; and
17maternal grandfather, James LaHam of Deerbrook.
