SJR50,1,32 Whereas, Gloria Kirking was born on March 4, 1949, in Bessemer, Michigan,
3and died on October 20, 2005, in Portage, Wisconsin; and
SJR50,1,74 Whereas, Gloria became an active member in the community of Portage,
5Wisconsin, serving as president on many boards throughout her years of service,
6including the Portage Area Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin Arts Board, Portage
7Country Club, and the Rotary Club, where she was also the first woman member; and
SJR50,1,128 Whereas, Gloria received many awards for her outstanding service to the
9community, including Person of the Year in 1995 for the Portage Area Chamber of
10Commerce, Paul Harris Fellowship recipient for the Rotary Club, and awards from
11the Wisconsin Home Builders Association as well as the National Home Builders
12Association; and
SJR50,1,15 13Whereas, Gloria was dedicated and active in the Republican Party, having
14campaigned for candidates and served as a delegate during the 1992 National
15Convention in Houston; and

1Whereas, Gloria was committed to her career, working in the field of title
2insurance for over 30 years; and
SJR50,2,5 3Whereas, Gloria had a great love for world traveling, having visited France,
4Russia, Hong Kong, Mexico, and the Virgin Islands, along with every major city in
5the United States; now, therefore, be it
SJR50,2,10 6Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
7Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Gloria Kirking
8contributed to this state, to the Portage community, and to Columbia County and her
9commitment to her family and friends, express sorrow at her death, and extend their
10condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further
SJR50,2,13 11Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
12resolution to her deeply respected husband, James Guthrie; her mother, Helen
13Monk; her children, Angela and Aaron; and her brothers, James and Joe Karvonen.
