SJR71,1,2 1Relating to: the life and military service of Staff Sergeant Todd Cornell of the
2United States Army Reserves who lost his life during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
SJR71,1,53 Whereas, on November 9, 2004, Staff Sergeant Todd Cornell of West Bend,
4Wisconsin, a member of the Army Reserves 1st Battalion, 339th Infantry Regiment,
5died as a result of wounds received during enemy action in Fallujah, Iraq; and
SJR71,1,86 Whereas, Staff Sergeant Cornell, born January 3, 1966, will be remembered for
7his free spirit, spending his childhood summers helping a farmer with beekeeping,
8hay harvesting, and work in his apple orchard, and as a 4-H member; and
SJR71,1,129 Whereas, during his high school years, Staff Sergeant Cornell was an avid
10swimmer, going to state meets his freshman and senior years, and someone who
11loved restoring old cars and riding with the wind on his Harley Davidson motorcycle;
12and
SJR71,1,1413 Whereas, the number one priority in Staff Sergeant Cornell's life was love for
14his 2 children, Caitlin and Jake; and

1Whereas, Staff Sergeant Cornell will be remembered as someone who always
2said, "Send me," when asked to defend his fellow soldiers and his country, who was
3a proud member of the United States Army, willing to serve with pride and without
4prejudices, and a true American patriot; and
SJR71,2,105 Whereas, Staff Sergeant Cornell provided faithful and honorable service to the
6people of the state of Wisconsin and the United States, receiving the Purple Heart,
7a Bronze Star for meritorious service, and a Bronze Star for valor, the National
8Infantry Association Order of Saint Maurice award, plus six other awards from Army
9Reserves, and having taken enemy fire to prevent insurgents from attacking the
10Iraqis he supervised; and
SJR71,2,1611 Whereas, following his death, a conference room at the Army Command Center
12in Baghdad was dedicated to Staff Sergeant Cornell and adorned with his portrait,
13a leadership award was created in his name at Ft. Lewis, Washington, and, during
14the historic January 2005 Iraqi elections, an American flag was flown in his honor
15on a United States Air Force C-17, then presented to Staff Sergeant Cornell's
16surviving family; and
SJR71,2,1917 Whereas, the people of Wisconsin mourn the death of Staff Sergeant Cornell
18and thank him, with the deepest respect and gratitude, for his bravery and for
19making the ultimate sacrifice for his country; and
SJR71,2,2120 Whereas, Staff Sergeant Cornell was laid to rest on November 18, 2004; now,
21therefore, be it
SJR71,2,25 22Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
23the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Staff Sergeant Todd
24Cornell and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues;
25and, be it further

1Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
2resolution to Staff Sergeant Cornell's parents, Robert and Renee Cornell, his sister,
3Tamara Rono, and his children, Caitlin Cornell and Jake Cornell.
