SJR3,1,1 1Relating to: the life and service of Milton McPike.
SJR3,1,32 Whereas, Milton McPike was born on October 9, 1939, in Jacksonville, Illinois,
3and died on March 28, 2008; and
SJR3,1,64 Whereas, Milton McPike graduated from Northeast Missouri State University
5with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Master of Science degree in
6physical education; and
SJR3,1,97 Whereas, Milton McPike was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1961 and
8then went on to become the assistant principal at Madison's West High School in
91974, where he served until 1979, when he became principal of East High School; and
SJR3,1,1210 Whereas, Milton McPike received the district's Distinguished Service Award in
111988, leading to his recognition as one of the top 10 American Heroes in Education
12by Reader's Digest; and
SJR3,1,1413 Whereas, Milton McPike was named Wisconsin's "Principal of the Year" in
141997; and

1Whereas, Milton McPike was named "Educator of the Year" in 1998 by the
2Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce; and
SJR3,2,43 Whereas, Milton McPike was presented with the city of Madison MLK
4Humanitarian award in 2007; and
SJR3,2,75 Whereas, Milton McPike retired as principal in June 2002 and was appointed
6to the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System in June 2004,
7resigning in 2008 due to health concerns; and
SJR3,2,108 Whereas, Milton McPike left a lasting impression on all of the students he
9encountered with his eagerness to connect on an individual level and through his
10constant vigilance towards improving the quality of their education; and
SJR3,2,1211 Whereas, Milton McPike is survived by his wife, Sharon, and 6 children; now,
12therefore, be it
SJR3,2,16 13Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
14the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Milton McPike and
15extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it
16further
SJR3,2,18 17Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
18resolution to Milton McPike's wife, Sharon.
