AJR71,1,32 Whereas, farming and agribusiness have been important to the Evansville
3community since 1839; and
AJR71,1,54 Whereas, cooperative efforts of farmers and city residents have made the
5Evansville area strong in business, education, and social organizations; and
AJR71,1,106 Whereas, area farmers, members of the Grange, also known as Patrons of
7Husbandry, organized a general store called the Evansville Mercantile Association
8in 1874 that was an important part of the Evansville economy for more than 100
9years and was housed in buildings that continue to be important downtown business
10sites; and
AJR71,1,1311 Whereas, Evansville businessmen organized the Baker Manufacturing
12Company in 1873 to manufacture engines, windmills, and water pumping
13equipment to improve conditions on the farm and in the city; and

1Whereas, farmers organized the Union Cooperative Association in 1935,
2starting with less than 200 members and growing to become part of Landmark
3Services Cooperative; and
AJR71,2,64 Whereas, Pruden Product Company started operation in 1954 by
5manufacturing feeders for farm animals and developed into one of the largest steel
6building manufacturers in the nation, VP Buildings; and
AJR71,2,117 Whereas, Evansville area farmers have always taken pride in having the
8highest quality livestock, crops, and well maintained farms and for generations have
9promoted excellence in agriculture by cooperating with the University School of
10Agriculture and University of Wisconsin Extension to organize farmers institutes
11and other educational opportunities; and
AJR71,2,1512 Whereas, Evansville farmers and agribusinesses have received national and
13international attention for their expertise in agriculture throughout the years and
14have welcomed opportunities to share their knowledge with visitors to Evansville
15from many countries; and
AJR71,2,1716 Whereas, in 1983 the Wisconsin Soybean Association designated Evansville
17the Soybean Capital of Wisconsin; and
AJR71,2,1918 Whereas, the North Prairie Productions biodiesel facility begins a new chapter
19in Evansville agribusiness; now, therefore, be it
AJR71,2,22 20Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
21Wisconsin legislature declare Evansville, Wisconsin, the Soybean Capital of
22Wisconsin.
