AJR1,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming Niagara Escarpment year and month.
AJR1,1,42 Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment is a 650 mile long geologic feature of
3international scale and global importance that reaches across Wisconsin, Michigan,
4Ontario, and New York; and
AJR1,1,75 Whereas, in Wisconsin, the Niagara Escarpment extends for a distance of over
6230 miles and runs though Door, Kewaunee, Brown, Manitowoc, Calumet, Fond du
7Lac, Dodge, and Waukesha counties; and
AJR1,1,108 Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment's cliff faces and high elevation on the
9landscape provide numerous important vistas and viewsheds, several of which are
10as much as 200 feet above the surrounding landscape; and
AJR1,1,1411 Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment corridor is home to high levels of
12biodiversity and unique plant and animal species, and over 240 different rare,
13threatened, or endangered plant and animal species have been identified along the
14Niagara Escarpment; and

1Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment is known to have highly sensitive
2groundwater resources due to its composition of highly fractured bedrock and karst
3features; and
AJR1,2,74 Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment contains numerous high-value passive
5recreation areas and contributes significantly to the tourism-based economy of
6many of the corridor's communities, and two of Wisconsin's most visited State Parks
7— Peninsula and High Cliff — lie along the Niagara Escarpment; and
AJR1,2,138 Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment corridor has significant historical and
9cultural features which equate with both past and present uses of its resources. The
10Niagara Escarpment has been used since Paleo-Indian times for ceremonial
11purposes, has a long tradition of being a top agricultural area, is home to a rapidly
12growing viticulture industry and wine producing region, and is known as a present
13day source for quality building materials such as cut stone and crushed rock; and
AJR1,2,1614 Whereas, past and present landowners have used the Niagara Escarpment
15landscape as a resource for which to build communities, sustain their livelihoods,
16and promote a strong stewardship ethic; and
AJR1,2,1917 Whereas, the Niagara Escarpment has been recognized by the Wisconsin
18Department of Natural Resources as a highly ranked "Land Legacy Place"; now,
19therefore, be it
AJR1,2,23 20Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
21Wisconsin state legislature proclaim the year 2010 as the "Year of the Niagara
22Escarpment" in the State of Wisconsin so as to foster awareness and education on
23this important and unique landscape feature; and, be it further
AJR1,3,2 24Resolved, That the month of May 2010 be proclaimed as the "Month of the
25Niagara Escarpment" in the State of Wisconsin in order to promote efforts to

1recognize the Niagara Escarpment's significance as a statewide geologic and natural
2resource.
