AJR22,1,2 1Relating to: commending Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan on his appointment
2as archbishop of New York.
AJR22,1,63 Whereas, Pope John Paul II named Timothy Michael Dolan the archbishop of
4Milwaukee on June 25, 2002. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, papal nuncio to the
5United States, installed Archbishop Dolan as Milwaukee's tenth archbishop on
6August 28, 2002, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist; and
AJR22,1,147 Whereas, Archbishop Dolan was born on February 6, 1950, the first of five
8children born to Shirley Radcliffe Dolan and the late Robert Dolan. In 1964,
9Archbishop Dolan began his high school seminary education at St. Louis Preparatory
10Seminary South in Shrewsbury, Missouri. His seminary foundation continued at
11Cardinal Glennon College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy.
12He then completed his priestly formation at the Pontifical North American College
13in Rome where he earned a license in sacred theology at the Pontifical University of
14St. Thomas; and

1Whereas, Archbishop Dolan was ordained to the priesthood on June 19, 1976.
2He then served as associate pastor at Immacolata Parish in Richmond Heights,
3Missouri, until 1979 when he began studies for a doctorate in American Church
4History at the Catholic University of America. Before completing the doctorate, he
5spent a year researching the late Archbishop Edwin O'Hara, a founder of the
6Catholic Biblical Association. Archbishop O'Hara's life and ministry were the
7subject of Archbishop Dolan's doctoral dissertation; and
AJR22,2,118 Whereas, Archbishop Dolan served in parish ministry in St. Louis, Missouri,
9from 1983 to 1987, during which time he was also a liaison for the late Archbishop
10John L. May in the restructuring of the college and theology programs of the
11archdiocesan seminary system; and
AJR22,2,1612 Whereas, on June 19, 2001—the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ordination to
13the priesthood—then Father Dolan was named the auxiliary bishop of St. Louis by
14Pope John Paul II. The new Bishop Dolan chose for his Episcopal motto the
15profession of faith of St. Peter: "Ad Quem Ibimus?" (Lord to whom shall we go?) (John
166:68); and
AJR22,2,2017 Whereas, Archbishop Dolan has led the 211 parishes and nearly 700,000
18Catholics within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee through a period of healing and
19reconciliation with integrity and honor. In addition, he has been a leader to all
20Milwaukeeans regardless of their faiths; and
AJR22,2,2321 Whereas, Pope Benedict XVI named Archbishop Dolan the archbishop of New
22York on February 23, 2009. Milwaukeeans of all faiths send their prayers with
23Archbishop Dolan as he embarks on this new endeavor; now, therefore, be it

1Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That we commend
2Archbishop Dolan for his service to the citizens of Wisconsin and wish him well with
3his new job serving the people of New York.
