Whereas, James A. McCann was born on March 7, 1924, in Freedom,
3Wisconsin, and died on February 20, 2009; and

Whereas, Mr. McCann earned a B.B.A. degree from the University of
5Wisconsin-Madison in 1959; and

Whereas, Mr. McCann served in World War II and the Korean Conflict; and

Whereas, Mr. McCann married Shirley McCann, to whom he was married for
854 years; and

Whereas, Mr. McCann was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1964,
10representing Milwaukee's 15th district, serving in the 1965 and 1967 sessions; and

Whereas, after leaving the legislature, he was elected to the Milwaukee
12Common Council in 1968 and to the city comptroller's post in 1972; and

Whereas, during his tenure as city comptroller, he served on the Milwaukee
14Pension Board until 1997; and

1Whereas, as a certified public accountant, Mr. McCann was active in the
2Wisconsin Government Finance Officers Association; and

Whereas, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Wisconsin Government
4Finance Officers Association sent him to provide financial expertise to newly
5emerging democracies in Eastern Europe; now, therefore, be it

6Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
7Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that James A. McCann
8contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and
9extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further

10Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
11resolution to Mr. McCann's wife, Shirley; son, Brian McCann; and daughters, Shari
12Brand and Maureen Wahhab.
