SJR25,1,42 Whereas, The Progressive magazine, the successor to La Follette's, was founded
3by the great senator and governor from Wisconsin, Robert M. ("Fighting Bob") La
4Follette in Madison in 1909; and
SJR25,1,8 5Whereas, throughout its 100-year history, The Progressive has stayed true to
6the principles of Fighting Bob La Follette, including peace, civil rights, civil liberties,
7the environment, an independent media, the restraint of corporate power, and the
8expansion of citizen power; and
SJR25,1,11 9Whereas, The Progressive magazine, always based in Madison, has brought
10distinction to the state of Wisconsin by joining the national debate on the crucial
11issues of our day, with civility and intelligence; and
SJR25,1,14 12Whereas, this spring, the University of Wisconsin Press will publish The
13Progressive's
anthology, Democracy in Print: The Best of The Progressive, 1909-2009;
14and

1Whereas, this April, The Progressive will publish a special 100th anniversary
2edition of the magazine, which contains many excerpts from Fighting Bob La Follette
3and his wife, Belle Case La Follette (the suffragist and the first woman to graduate
4from the University of Wisconsin Law School), as well as hundreds of other
5luminaries; and
SJR25,2,8 6Whereas, The Progressive will host a conference and celebration, May 1 and 2,
7at Monona Terrace in Madison to commemorate its 100th anniversary; now,
8therefore, be it
SJR25,2,13 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature honor The Progressive for its 100 years of dedication to the
11principles of Wisconsin's greatest elected official, Fighting Bob La Follette, and for
12bringing distinction to the state of Wisconsin for faithfully carrying those principles
13forth into the national debate.
