SJR51,1,32 Whereas, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a
3woman's life is about one in eight; and
SJR51,1,64 Whereas, in 2009 an estimated 192,370 women will be diagnosed with breast
5cancer in the United States, including 3,480 in Wisconsin, and 40,170 women will die
6from breast cancer in the United States, including 750 Wisconsin residents; and
SJR51,1,87 Whereas, breast cancer profoundly impacts the lives of men and women,
8patients and partners, individuals, businesses, communities, and our state; and
SJR51,1,109 Whereas, since the 1990's breast cancer incidence rates and the chance of dying
10from breast cancer have steadily declined; and
SJR51,1,13 11Whereas, organizations like Susan G. Komen for the Cure along with other
12nonprofit organizations have helped bring incidence and death rates down and lead
13the fight to find a cure for breast cancer; and

1Whereas, over the past 27 years Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised and
2invested more than $1.5 billion into cutting edge research and community outreach,
3education, and support programs; and
SJR51,2,64 Whereas, today, more than 1.5 million people run annually in Komen Race for
5the Cure events in more than 120 U.S. and 14 international cities, including races
6in Madison, Milwaukee, and, next year, in Wausau; and
SJR51,2,8 7Whereas, prevention, early detection, and treatment of breast cancer saves
8lives, saves money, and improves the quality of life for all Wisconsin citizens; and
SJR51,2,139 Whereas, from October 19 through October 31 the Wisconsin State Capitol
10dome will be lit with pink lights recognizing contributions made by thousands of
11volunteers who have worked to find the cures for breast cancer and acknowledging
12the need to continue those efforts until breast cancer is defeated; now, therefore, be
13it
SJR51,2,18 14Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
15legislature proclaims the month of October 2009 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month
16throughout the state and encourages all state residents to recognize the importance
17of prevention and early detection, the vital need for the investment in research, and
18the shared commitment to finding the cures for breast cancer.
