AJR37,1,32 Whereas, mental health conditions are real and prevalent, affecting one in four
3members of our community; and
AJR37,1,54 Whereas, four of the ten leading causes of disability in the United States and
5other developed countries are mental disorders; and
AJR37,1,76 Whereas, fewer than one-third of adults and one-half of children living with
7a diagnosable mental disorder receive mental health services in a given year; and
AJR37,1,108 Whereas, the failure to treat mental illnesses drives up costs across society
9through absenteeism, suicide, lost productivity, incarceration, unemployment,
10homelessness, and co-morbidity; and
AJR37,1,1211 Whereas, with effective treatment and prevention, individuals living with
12mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives; and
AJR37,1,1413 Whereas, access to mental health treatment is obstructed by a number
14attitudinal, structural, and financial barriers; and

1Whereas, each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider,
2organization, and citizen shares the burden of mental health problems in our society
3and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support the need for
4appropriate and accessible services for all people living with mental health
5conditions; now, therefore, be it
AJR37,2,7 6Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
7hereby proclaims the month of May in 2011 as Mental Health Awareness Month.
