AR3,1,1 1Relating to: honoring the victims of the Arizona shootings.
AR3,1,42 Whereas, on the morning of Saturday, January 8, 2011, an armed assailant
3fired upon a crowd of citizens assembled at a supermarket for the purpose of a
4constituent meeting with a member of Congress in Tucson, Arizona; and
AR3,1,75 Whereas, as a result of the attack, six individuals were killed and fourteen were
6injured, including U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, two of her aides, and
7several private citizens; and
AR3,1,138 Whereas, the fallen were U.S. District Court Judge John Roll, 63; Gabe
9Zimmerman, 30, a former social worker and member of Congresswoman Gabrielle
10Giffords' staff; Dorwan Stoddard, 76, a retired construction worker and gas station
11owner; Phyllis Schneck, 79, a grandmother who was active in her church; Dorothy
12Morris, 76, a retired secretary and bookkeeper; and Christina Green, a 9-year-old
13girl; and

1Whereas, a group of four private citizens acted heroically in disarming the
2attacker, ensuring he was not able to flee the scene and averting further loss of life;

AR3,2,64 Whereas, open discussion and debate of matters of policy between members of
5the public and elected representatives is at the heart of the American governing
6tradition; and
AR3,2,9 7Whereas, as elected officials we all recognize that discussion can and should be
8able to take place in a public forum with respect and consideration for one another
9and our constituents; and
AR3,2,1110 Whereas, public servants have the honorable duty of routinely engaging with
11and remaining accessible to the constituencies they are privileged to represent; and
AR3,2,1312 Whereas, the members of the Wisconsin legislature similarly strive to serve our
13country and constituents in a manner befitting this great institution; and
AR3,2,1514 Whereas, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the dead and
15wounded following this national tragedy; now, therefore, be it
AR3,2,20 16Resolved by the assembly, That the assembly of the state of Wisconsin hereby
17recognizes and honors those slain in the Arizona attack, extends its deepest
18sympathies to the families and friends of the victims, hopes for the full and swift
19recovery for those who have been wounded, and commends the courageous citizens
20who intervened to prevent further violence.
