2011 - 2012 LEGISLATURE
October 5, 2011 - Introduced by Senators Galloway and Holperin, cosponsored by
Representatives Tiffany, Williams, Nygren and Van Roy. Referred to
Committee on Transportation and Elections.
SB215,1,2 1An Act to amend 341.25 (1) (g); and to create 341.25 (1) (gf) of the statutes;
2relating to: trailer or semitrailer registration.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, the fee that must be paid to the Department of
Transportation for registering a motor truck is based upon the vehicle's weight. The
fee for a vehicle weighing 12,000 pounds or less is $209 and the fee for a vehicle
weighing 16,000 pounds or less is $283. A trailer or semitrailer not exceeding 12,000
pounds and designed to be hauled by a motor vehicle other than a truck tractor
(trailer) may be registered for one-half of the fee prescribed for a motor truck of the
same weight, but a trailer exceeding 12,000 pounds is registered for the same fee
prescribed for a motor truck of the same weight.
This bill creates a registration category for trailers weighing more than 12,000
pounds but not more than 14,000 pounds that are designed to be hauled by a motor
vehicle other than a truck tractor. These trailers may be registered for a fee that is
one-half of the average of the fees prescribed for motor trucks weighing 12,000
pounds and 16,000 pounds, which, under current law, is a fee of $123.
For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as
an appendix to this bill.
