AB573,1,3 1An Act to renumber and amend 17.03 (4m); to amend 119.04 (1); and to
2create
17.03 (4m) (b) and 120.06 (16) of the statutes; relating to: requiring
3school board members to complete an orientation and training program.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill requires a school board member to complete a 16-hour orientation and
training program within one year of initially taking office. The program must be
offered by a statewide association organized for the benefit of school board members
or be approved by the Department of Public Instruction. The school board must pay
the cost of the program for its members.
The requirement first applies to school board members who take office in 2015.
If a school board member fails to complete the requirement within one year, his or
her seat on the school board is vacant.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

AB573,2 4Section 2. 17.03 (4m) (b) of the statutes is created to read:
AB573,2,65 17.03 (4m) (b) The incumbent fails to complete the orientation and training
6program required under s. 120.06 (16) within one year of initially taking office.

AB573,4 19Section 4. 120.06 (16) of the statutes is created to read:
AB573,3,220 120.06 (16) Within one year of initially taking office, each school board member
21shall complete a 16-hour orientation and training program that is offered by a
22statewide association organized for the benefit of school board members or that is
23approved by the department. When a school board member completes the program,
24the association or other person providing the program shall certify the completion

1to the appropriate school district clerk. The school board shall pay the cost of the
2program for its members.

AB573,3,44 (1) This act first applies to school board members who first take office in 2015.
