2015 Senate JOINT RESOLUTION 29

SJR29,1,2 Relating to: the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the American Civil War.

SJR29,1,4 Whereas, on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox, Virginia; and

SJR29,1,6 Whereas, the Civil War led to the greatest loss of American life in military conflict to date; and

SJR29,1,8 Whereas, more than 91,000 soldiers from Wisconsin served in 56 regiments during the Civil War; and

SJR29,1,10 Whereas, Wisconsin soldiers fought in every major battle of the Civil War from 1861 to 1865; and

SJR29,1,12 Whereas, more than 12,000 Wisconsin residents died while fighting the Confederacy; and

SJR29,1,14 Whereas, the victory was a model internationally for the strength and resolve of democratic government; and

SJR29,2,3 Whereas, the Union victory had a profound impact on the history of the United States, and reaffirmed the central truth from the Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal"; now, therefore, be it

SJR29,2,6 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature commemorates the end of the Civil War, the sacrifices of brave men and women of Wisconsin, and the battle to end slavery both here and around the globe.
