SJR29,1,43 Whereas, on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern
4Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox, Virginia; and
SJR29,1,65 Whereas, the Civil War led to the greatest loss of American life in military
6conflict to date; and
SJR29,1,87 Whereas, more than 91,000 soldiers from Wisconsin served in 56 regiments
8during the Civil War; and
SJR29,1,109 Whereas, Wisconsin soldiers fought in every major battle of the Civil War from
101861 to 1865; and
SJR29,1,1211 Whereas, more than 12,000 Wisconsin residents died while fighting the
12Confederacy; and
SJR29,1,1413 Whereas, the victory was a model internationally for the strength and resolve
14of democratic government; and

1Whereas, the Union victory had a profound impact on the history of the United
2States, and reaffirmed the central truth from the Declaration of Independence that
3"all men are created equal"; now, therefore, be it
SJR29,2,6 4Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
5legislature commemorates the end of the Civil War, the sacrifices of brave men and
6women of Wisconsin, and the battle to end slavery both here and around the globe.
