AJR67,1,32 Whereas, diabetes is a devastating chronic illness that affects how a person's
3body uses blood sugar or glucose; and
AJR67,1,54 Whereas, when there is an absence or insufficient production of insulin, which
5lowers blood glucose, a person will be afflicted with diabetes; and
AJR67,1,96 Whereas, there are two types of diabetes, referred to as type 1 and type 2
7diabetes, and that, regardless of which type a person may have, if a person has
8diabetes the person has too much glucose in his or her blood, which can lead to serious
9and chronic health problems; and
AJR67,1,1110 Whereas, in 2012, 9.3 percent of the United States, or 29.1 million Americans,
11had diabetes and of that 29.1 million, 8.1 million were undiagnosed cases; and
AJR67,1,1412 Whereas, in 2012, in Wisconsin, diabetes affected over 475,000 adults and 4,500
13children and adolescents, resulting in an estimated annual $6.15 billion in health
14care costs; and

1Whereas, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States;

AJR67,2,53 Whereas, diabetes may lead to severe complications, such as heart disease,
4kidney disease, blindness, and amputations, many of whose symptoms and costs
5could be prevented if the proper measures are taken; and
AJR67,2,86 Whereas, the Wisconsin Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) is
7dedicated to improving the health of people at risk for or who already have diabetes;
8and
AJR67,2,119 Whereas, the first step in preventing diabetes is the distribution of resources
10and information and alerting the public about the severity of diabetes; now,
11therefore, be it
AJR67,2,14 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
13hereby proclaims November 2017 as Diabetes Awareness Month in Wisconsin; and,
14be it further
AJR67,2,17 15Resolved, That the legislature considers it vital that we educate all of our
16citizens, and most importantly our youth, on the severity of diabetes, the
17accompanying health risks, and the measures that can be taken to prevent diabetes.
