SJR78,1,1 Relating to: proclaiming September 2017 as Emergency Preparedness Month.

SJR78,1,3 Whereas, natural disasters affect communities across the country, so it is important that every household is prepared; and

SJR78,1,4 Whereas, any community can be impacted by a disaster or emergency; and

SJR78,1,6 Whereas, common disasters may include extreme heat, extreme cold, flooding, winter storms, droughts, and wildfires; and

SJR78,1,8 Whereas, lack of emergency preparedness can result in injury, death, and preventable monetary damages; and

SJR78,1,11 Whereas, families across Wisconsin can take active steps to prevent and mitigate against emergencies; these steps may include insurance, emergency planning, and developing emergency preparedness and supply kits; and

SJR78,1,14 Whereas, federal, state, and local governments have developed and created programs to inform communities of common prevention and survival tools in case an emergency occurs; and

SJR78,1,15 Whereas, Wisconsin winters and storms pose elevated risks for commuters; and

SJR78,2,2 Whereas, Wisconsin has averaged 20,000 motor vehicle crashes during the winter months; and

SJR78,2,5 Whereas, keeping a winter emergency kit with blankets, a first aid kit, a flashlight, and booster cables may help individuals prepare for and overcome harsh winter conditions; and

SJR78,2,7 Whereas, the legislature has an opportunity to bring awareness to the importance of emergency preparedness; now, therefore, be it

SJR78,2,9 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature proclaims September 2017 as Emergency Preparedness Month in Wisconsin.
