AJR123,1,32 Whereas, the brilliant and groundbreaking actor and diplomat Sidney Poitier
3was one of the most impactful actors in Hollywood history; and
AJR123,1,64 Whereas, Sidney Poitier was born in Miami, Florida, to Evelyn and Reginald
5James Poitier. Despite being born on American soil, Mr. Poitier grew up on Cat Island
6in the Bahamas with little formal education; and
AJR123,1,97 Whereas, at the age of 14, Mr. Poitier came back to America to live with his
8brother, where he witnessed firsthand the racial injustices that plagued Black
9American communities; and
AJR123,1,1210 Whereas, Mr. Poitier worked his way to New York, where he worked several jobs
11to make ends meet. While in New York, he began his venture into acting by
12auditioning for the American Negro Theatre; and
AJR123,1,1513 Whereas, while Mr. Poitier's performance was rejected because of his lack of
14education and non-American accent, he persevered to keep working towards
15becoming an actor; and

1Whereas, in 1946, Mr. Poitier was called to take the stage in an all-Black
2production of Lysistrata, where he made his debut performance; and
AJR123,2,63 Whereas, Mr. Poitier began to star in numerous roles in television and cinema,
4including as Dr. Brooks in No Way Out (1950), as Gregory Miller in Blackboard
5Jungle
(1955), and as Noah Cullen in The Defiant Ones (1958), for which he received
6an Oscar Nomination for Best Actor; and
AJR123,2,97 Whereas, in 1963, Mr. Poitier became the first Black actor to win an Oscar for
8Best Actor, which he won for his brilliant performance as Homer Smith in Lilies of
9the Field
(1963). This performance also won him the Golden Globe for Best Actor; and
AJR123,2,1110 Whereas, in addition to his trailblazing acting career, Mr. Poitier was also a
11diplomat, activist, and ambassador in his time; and
AJR123,2,1312 Whereas, Mr. Poitier was a participant in the March on Washington in 1963 and
13remained an outspoken voice against racial injustice throughout his life; and
AJR123,2,1514 Whereas, Mr. Poitier was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974 for his
15contributions and impact on the world stage; and
AJR123,2,1716 Whereas, Mr. Poitier served as The Bahamas' Ambassador to Japan from
172002-2007 and also served as The Bahamas' ambassador to UNESCO; and
AJR123,2,2018 Whereas, in 2009, Mr. Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
19by President Barack Obama for his talent and hard work in advancing the nation's
20dialogue on race and respect; now, therefore, be it

22Wisconsin Legislature join in honoring Mr. Sidney Poitier as one of the legends in the
23Golden Age of Hollywood.
