September 28, 1999
To: Members, Agencies and Staffs of the Wisconsin State Legislature:
There now have passed, incredibly, more than six months since a wounded cat in the road and a mechanical flaw in my elderly sports car conspired to put me in the hospital for two weeks and then on a steady but maddeningly slow and still unfinished road to recovery.
Before any more time elapses I wish to place in the record my deeply felt thanks to so many of you in the Assembly, the Senate, the offices of the Chief Clerks of both houses, caucus and individual members' staffs, members of the Legislative Fiscal Bureau and other service agencies, who took the time to send cards or notes, make phone calls or to pay personal visits during my hospitalization. Thanks, too, to so many who have wished me well in person since then as I began to return to full-time work in the Capitol press corps.
I will be unable to look at a bed pan or wheelchair in the future without remembering the pain and inconvenience of the experience. But I will be reminded also of all of you and, with fond gratitude, of all of your kindness.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
