2003 Senate Joint Resolution 17
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life of Dr. Laurel Blair Salton Clark.
Whereas, Dr. Laurel Blair Salton Clark was born on March 10, 1961, in Ames, Iowa, and died on the morning of February 1, 2003, when the space shuttle Columbia was lost while returning home to Earth; and
Whereas, Dr. Clark grew up in and always considered Racine her hometown; and
Whereas, Dr. Clark graduated from Racine Horlick High School in 1979 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1983 and a medical degree in 1987 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
Whereas, after completing medical school, Dr. Clark joined the U.S. Navy where she served with distinction as a commander and a naval flight surgeon; and
Whereas, Dr. Clark was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as an astronaut in 1996; and
Whereas, while Dr. Clark's journey through life took her to great heights, she always remembered Racine and Wisconsin, taking memorabilia from Racine Horlick High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with her into space; and
Whereas, Dr. Clark was a mother, daughter, sister, wife, and hero who died advancing the cause of science on her first space flight mission; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the life of Dr. Laurel Blair Salton Clark, express their sorrow at her death, and extend their condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Dr. Clark's husband, Jonathan, and son, Iain, of Houston, Texas, to her mother, Marge, of Oro Valley, Arizona, to her brothers, Dan and Jon, and to her sister, Lynne.
