Whereas, Herbert M. Smith was born on May 9, 1903, and died on January 10,
32005, in his hometown of Neillsville, Wisconsin, where he was a lifelong resident; and

Whereas, Herb Smith had an impressively successful military career, achieving
5the rank of full Colonel in the Wisconsin National Guard; and

Whereas, having joined the national guard at age 16, he was believed to be the
7oldest living member of the Wisconsin National Guard before his passing; and

Whereas, he received many military commendations while serving, including
9the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery and valor during
10World War II; and

Whereas, Herbert Smith was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in 1990
12and was inducted into the Wisconsin Army National Guard's "Hall of Honor" in 2001;

1Whereas, Herbert Smith operated his family-owned Badger Telephone
2Company and led it through numerous technological transformations, including the
3move from operator-assisted calls to dial phones, until it was sold in 1965; and

Whereas, Herb wrote his autobiography and remained loyal to his hometown
5of Neillsville, Wisconsin, and was an active and contributing member of the
6community; now, therefore, be it

7Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
8legislature of the state of Wisconsin recognize the life and years of public service of
9Colonel Herbert M. Smith, acknowledge their appreciation for the contributions he
10has made to the Wisconsin National Guard, express their sorrow at his death, and
11extend their condolences to his family and friends.
