Whereas, March 1 is St. David's Day, a day honoring the patron saint of Wales;

Whereas, natives of Wales began moving to Wisconsin during the 1840s,
5settling principally in the southwest corner of the state and in Columbia, Milwaukee,
6Racine, and Waukesha counties; and

Whereas, among their early contributions to this state were their extensive
8knowledge of mining and stock breeding and their musical talent, as evidenced by
9the popularity of the Welsh Musical Union; and

Whereas, a few towns and villages in Wisconsin, such as Beaver Dam, Cambria,
11Randolph, Wales, Pickett, Waukesha, and Oshkosh, still retain a Welsh flavor; and

Whereas, many prominent residents of this state were of Welsh descent; among
13them are Frank Lloyd Wright; Evan Evans, a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals
14for the Seventh Circuit; Joseph Davies, an ambassador to Russia; and Peter
15Houston, the inventor of the folding film roll; and

1Whereas, St. David's Day has traditionally been celebrated by the Welsh by
2reading poetry, singing, and eating Welsh food; now, therefore, be it

3Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
4Wisconsin legislature salute all of the persons of Welsh descent for their significant
5contributions to this state, express appreciation for those persons who have kept
6alive Welsh culture and traditions, and join with all Wisconsinites who revere their
7Welsh heritage in celebrating St. David's Day on March 1, 2007.
