SJR3,1,1 1Relating to: the life and military service of Captain Rhett W. Schiller.
SJR3,1,42 Whereas, Captain Rhett W. Schiller was born on November 7, 1980, in Racine,
3Wisconsin, and died on November 16, 2006, in Balad Ruz, Iraq, while his unit was
4engaged with small arms fire by anti-Iraqi forces; and
SJR3,1,75 Whereas, Captain Schiller served with distinction as the Executive Officer for
6Troop C, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd
7Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and
SJR3,1,98 Whereas, Captain Schiller attended the International School of Amsterdam
9and graduated from the Shanghai American School in May of 1999; and
SJR3,1,1210 Whereas, Captain Schiller graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West
11Point, where he majored in Chinese, and was commissioned a second lieutenant of
12infantry in May of 2003; and
SJR3,2,213 Whereas, Captain Schiller completed the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the
14Basic Airborne Course, and Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was
15assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, was a platoon leader in Company B, 3rd

1Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and later the Executive Officer for
2Company A; and
SJR3,2,93 Whereas, Captain Schiller was given the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart,
4Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service
5Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army
6Service Ribbon, the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert
7Infantryman Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, and graduated from the
8Reconnaissance and Surveillance Leader's Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, as the
9honor graduate; and
SJR3,2,1110 Whereas, Captain Schiller was known for caring for his fellow soldiers, raising
11spirits, and touching the lives of everyone he met; and
SJR3,2,1412 Whereas, Captain Schiller made his family, his friends, and his country
13extremely proud of his courage and bravery as he made the ultimate sacrifice in
14service of his nation in fighting for the course of freedom; now, therefore be it
SJR3,2,18 15Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
16Wisconsin legislature honor Captain Rhett W. Schiller for his dedication to his
17country and express their heartfelt sorrow and deepest sympathies to his family and
18friends; and, be it further
SJR3,3,4 19Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
20resolution to Captain Schiller's parents, William and Karla of Waterford, Wisconsin;
21his fiancée, Tiffany Phelps of Fayetteville, North Carolina; his brother, Marine
22Captain Ryan Schiller, sister-in-law, Martha, and niece, Olivia, of Temecula,
23California; his sister, Rhonda Sutaria and brother-in-law, Raj, of Long Island, New
24York; his sister, Renee Ray, brother-in-law, Captain Brian Ray, and nephew, Kyle,
25of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; his grandmother, Augustine Evelyn Schiller of

1Burlington, Wisconsin; his uncle and aunt, Jacob and Mary Klam of Madison,
2Wisconsin; his aunt and uncle, Mary and Richard Tremmel of Waterford, Wisconsin;
3his aunt and uncle, Susan and Royal Latshaw of Macomb, Michigan; and his best
4friend, Neil Munger of Racine, Wisconsin.
