2009 Assembly Joint Resolution 52
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commending the public service of Elizabeth Burmaster.
Whereas, Elizabeth Burmaster has served as our elected state superintendent of public instruction since 2001, with re-election in 2005 to the nonpartisan constitutional office; and
Whereas, before being elected state superintendent, Elizabeth Burmaster served as both a teacher and an administrator at every level in Wisconsin's public schools for over 25 years; and
Whereas, State Superintendent Burmaster's administration has focused on the New Wisconsin Promise, dedicated to raising the achievement of all students and closing the achievement gap between children of color and economically disadvantaged children and their peers; and
Whereas, State Superintendent Burmaster has advanced the investment in early learning opportunities so that 319 school districts now have four-year-old kindergarten, has ensured quality educators in every classroom and building through the implementation of the Wisconsin Quality Educator Initiative, and has set high standards for rigorous and relevant twenty-first century content and skills; and
Whereas, State Superintendent Burmaster has served on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, the Wisconsin Technical College System Board, the Governor's Council on Workforce Development, the Governor's State Advisory Council on Early Childhood Education and Care, and the Wisconsin PK-16 Leadership Council, thereby strengthening the linkage of PK-12 education, post-secondary education, and workforce development; and
Whereas, State Superintendent Burmaster has extended her vision and leadership to a national level as president and member of the board of directors of the Council of Chief State School Officers, member of the National Board of Advisors for Pre-K Now, and board member and chair of the National Center for Learning and Citizenship; and
Whereas, State Superintendent Burmaster has championed global connections for the students, teachers, and citizens of Wisconsin by establishing the Statewide International Education Council, convening Wisconsin's first International Education Summit, and promoting world languages and cultures through agreements with Germany, France, Japan, and Thailand; and
Whereas, State Superintendent Burmaster will continue her involvement in education as president of Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the
assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature commends Elizabeth Burmaster on her dedication to public service in her career as a teacher, an administrator, and the state superintendent and wishes her success in her future endeavors.
