Senator Robson, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of her son, Matthew Robson, as he celebrates his big 40th Birthday today. Matthew is a firefighter and paramedic.
Senator Kanavas, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of his daughter, Kate Kanavas, who is celebrating her 10th Birthday today.
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of "Juneteenth Day," to symbolize the struggle for freedom and equality in the United States. This day is a very different independence day celebrated in the African American communities across the country. Juneteenth Day commemorates June 19, 1865, when all slaves in the United States were finally set free. When President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, the effect was very minimal. Most slaves lived in territory controlled by confederate forces that did not recognize their freedom. It was not until June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and issued the emancipation order that the last of the slaves were set free. June 19th has come to symbolize the struggle for freedom and equality in the United States. Indeed, Juneteenth Day is much more about the future than the past. It is a day where we gather together to continue the struggle. We all realize that true freedom still eludes many of us. Those who suffer through poverty, injustice, and racial hatred still carry the chains of our ancestors. So adjourning in the honor of Juneteenth Day is Senator Taylor's way of saying that she is continuing her fight through the struggle that faces many communities every where.
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Daniel Sklansky in celebration of his graduation from the residency program at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Daniel attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who he admired greatly. Senator Taylor also adjourns in honor of Daniel's family who supported and encouraged him in his dream to become a doctor. Daniel is the son of my committee counsel, Ron Sklanksy, whom many of you know and we applaud him on a fine son. Daniel has been an example of excellence in his community and will surely be a great benefit to the medical profession.
