The Honorable, The Legislature:
According to 106.30, of the Wisconsin Statutes, the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) must submit a report regarding the nursing workforce to you by September 30 of each odd-numbered year. The report summarizes the response to the Wisconsin State 2010 Registered Nurse and 2011 Licensed Practical Nurse surveys administered by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services as a requirement for license renewal.
Under the statute, DWD must conduct a census of the nurses to assist policymakers in evaluating the supply of, demand for, and turnover among nurses, determining whether there are any regional shortages of nurses, shortages of nurses in any specialty areas, or impediments to entering the nursing profession in this state.

The report is based on statewide demographic information for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses receiving licenses in Wisconsin. The date included in this report reflect demographic characteristics, regional distribution of nurses, analysis of work setting and specialization and workforce diversity. The executive summary on page iii highlights the most notable observations from the report. Additionally, each chapter provides a summary and implications of the findings.
The data gathered has been shared with the Wisconsin Center for Nursing who, under 106.30(5), will use the report as a tool to address any impediments noted and develop strategies to ensure a nursing workforce that is adequate to meet the current and future health care needs of this state.
We hope that you find this report to be a useful reference in the development of policies regarding the future of Wisconsin' nursing workforce.
