Announcements, Adjournment Honors, and Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of her mother, Lena Taylor, whose birthday was on June 9th. She has been the mother who has made it possible for her to stand here. Her mother was the person who wanted the Senator to go to college. She picked her school, major, and classes. Lena had a vision for her daughter when the Senator had none for herself. Senator Taylor would like to thank her mother for dedicating her life to her children.
Senator Gudex, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Sydney Angle, 9, who was tragically taken from us by a tornado on May 20th, 2013 in Moore, Oklahoma, as she was one of seven children who lost their lives at the Plaza Elementary School. Sydney was the daughter of Dan and Nicole Angle formally of Fond du Lac and the granddaughter of Mike and Leslie Benson for Fond du Lac. Sydney, known to her parents as “Sydney Bear” loved the game of softball. Not only did the Angle family lose their daughter, they also lost their home that day. Her older sister, Casey, was also at the school that day and escaped. Senator Gudex would like the Senate to keep Sydney’s parents, grandparents, siblings, and family in their thoughts and prayers as they struggle to handle the loss of a loved one.
Senator Jauch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Deanna Glinski, a Barnes volunteer firefighter. Deanna and her husband, parents of four children, are both former members of the National Guard for over ten years. They had just purchased a home in Barnes a few days before the wildfires started in May. When the fire started, Deanna and hundreds of other firefighters were going door to door to protect other families. While she was doing her job, her home was burned to the ground. Deanna has been called a hero and exceptional human being for continuing to go and save others home and families after losing hers. Deanna is a true leader, wonderful public servant, and selflessly dedicated to others. In 2000, she was 1 of 150 women to participate in the first all-female National Guard class at Fort Sill. She graduated 5th out of all 364 soldiers. She is a great role model; she epitomizes and represents what is best of Wisconsin.
Senator Jauch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of all the fire departments and agencies that helped with the wildfire in Northern Wisconsin in May. This wildfire consumed more than 8,600 acres, destroying more than 19 homes and many other buildings. There were well over 40 volunteer fire departments that traveled as far as 75 to 90 miles to help families they never met and assist home owners who they will never meet again. Senator Schultz, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senator adjourn it do so in honor of John Symons, a fellow parishioner, who passed away recently. John retired at the age of 60 and came to Richland County, where he decided to open a business that at one time employed 19 families in the poorest part of the county selling agricultural crops. John’s idea was he wanted to help farmers in the area, and he provided the biggest and best farm market place anywhere between La Crosse and Richland Center. John was a lover of education. John, along with his wife, donated the money to the Richland campus to build what would become known as the Symons Center, a place where everybody in the county, regardless of whether or not they were on campus could enjoy a swimming pool and all kinds of health equipment. UW-Richland, a 2-year school, raised the most money privately for educational opportunities for the underprivileged than any other 2-year school because of this man’s vision and driving force.
Senator Schultz, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Dick Brockman, the owner and editor of the Platteville Journal for 31 years. There wasn’t much that happened in Platteville that he was not connected to. Dick never took credit for anything. He had a love for children and helped bring the Disney parade, through Make-A-Wish, to Platteville. Platteville named him as the Citizen of the Year last year. Another business man said he should have been named Citizen of the Century. Dick was a thoughtful journalist and a shining example of what everyone respects about journalists and what they do.
Senator Wirch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Vince Ruffolo, 83, who passed away on Sunday. Vince attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing and obtained his master’s degree in healthcare administration. He had been employed at Nash Motors in Kenosha and served his country in the Korean conflict. He was employed as Vice President of Operations at American Medical Development Company until his retirement in 1986. Vince was also a member of the Kenosha Historical Society and the Western Kenosha Historical Society. He was an advocate for healthcare and the people of Wisconsin right up until the end.
Senator Harsdorf, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Sahand Eftekari, visiting from River Falls. Sahand is a senior at River Falls High School and is serving as the student representative on the River Falls School Board. He is here today to see first-hand how state government works.
Senator Risser, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of a member of his staff, Sarah Briganti, who is leaving state service this month to begin a new chapter in her life in Colorado with her husband and family. Sarah has worked for the Wisconsin Legislature for 20 years and has been on the Senator’s staff for the last 17 of those years. She is a trusted advisor and good friend and she will be missed. Senator Risser wishes her the best as she moves on to her next adventure.
