Announcements, Adjournment Honors, And Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Miller, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in memory of his birth mother, Mary Elizabeth Scoon Miller and his stepmother, Marjorie “Midge” Cavins Leeper Miller, both of whom contracted a similar form of cancer. Mary underwent chemotherapy as an experimental treatment not covered by insurance in the early 60s. She did not survive even a year. Twenty years later, Marjorie’s cancer was treated with chemotherapy, which in the 90s was a routine therapy for cancer patients. Her treatment was covered by insurance. She lived another 25 years.
Senator Shilling, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of Syttende Mai weekend. Norwegian immigrants have made countless contributions to the cultures of Wisconsin and other regions of the United States. One out of every twelve Wisconsinites claims Norwegian ancestry and “Syttende Mai,” Norwegian for “May 17,” celebrates the anniversary of the 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution that declared Norway’s independence from Denmark. The Norwegian Constitution is the third-oldest in the world, being predated only by the constitutions of the United States and France. Norwegian culture can be found throughout Wisconsin in the cuisines of lutefisk and lefse, in the art of rosemaling, and in the presence of wood-carved trolls. Wisconsin communities, such as Westby, Stoughton, Blair, Mount Horeb, and Woodville, will celebrate Syttende Mai in many ways, including parades, Norwegian displays, Norwegian street music and dancers, Syttende Mai King and Queen presentations, Syttende Mai runs, special museum tours, choral concerts, church services, and Norwegian drama. Thousands of Wisconsin citizens of Norwegian heritage will participate in these activities during the month of May.

Senator Darling, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of the Brown Deer High School- Division 3 Boys Basketball Champions. Brown Deer won its first ever WIAA Boys Basketball Championship on Sunday, March 16, 2014, completing a remarkable 23-5 season.
Senator Darling, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of the Germantown High School- Division 1 Boys Basketball Champions and Whitefish Bay Dominican High School- Division 4 Boys Basketball Champions. Germantown and Whitefish Bay Dominican both won their third straight WIAA Boys Basketball Championships Saturday. Germantown and Dominican became two of only seven teams to win three consecutive boys basketball titles.
Senator Darling, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of the Whitefish Bay High School- Division 2 Girls Gymnastics. Whitefish Bay recently captured the WIAA Girls Gymnastics Championship in Wisconsin Rapids, led by Lily Hayes, who won the state all-around title, and freshman Aly Yurkowitz, who won a school record 12 individual medals.
