Special Privilege
Senator Wirch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of the Kenosha Unified School District. KUSD has just announced their high school graduation rate has hit its highest level in 15 years. According to the district, its overall graduation rate was 88.4% in 2014. The rate increased among almost all student groups including low income, minority students and students with disabilities.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of a man who has dedicated his life in service to his country and in particular, this stats, former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Jon Wilcox. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Jon Wilcox served honorably from 1959-1961 in the United States Army. Following his service, he attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, earning his law degree in 1965. In 1969, he was elected to the State Assembly, serving until 1975. He served on the Wisconsin Conservation Congress from 1975 until 1980. From 1979 to 1992, he served the people of Waushara County as a judge and as the chairman of the Wisconsin Committee of Chief Justices from 1985-1992. He also served as chairman of the Wisconsin Sentencing Commission from 1987-92. He concluded his professional career of service to Wisconsin when he retired from the Wisconsin Supreme Court after serving for 15 years.
Senator Vinehout, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of the Pepin/Alma Eagles football team that capped off an incredible season by advancing to the State Championship game this past fall for the first time in the program’s history. They were narrowly defeated in the Championship game after their late comeback bid fell just short, losing 17-12 to Owen-Withee. The success of the Pepin/Alma football team is a real tribute to their hard work, dedication and sportsmanship. It is also a tribute to their coach Mike Olson who was named the Green Bay Packers High School Football Coach of the Week after leading his team to the State Championship game. The team was also honored as a recipient of the WIAA State Tournament Team Sportsmanship Award for the exemplary conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, fans and other supporters of the program. Congratulations to the 2014 Pepin/Alma Eagles football team on their incredible season. Senator Olsen, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of his staffer, Mary Pluta, who has been with him since he was in the Assembly. Mary had a very serious operation this morning that was successful. Senator Olsen would like everyone to keep her recovery in their prayers as she has a long road to recovery and is a wonderful woman.
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr.. He lost his life trying to stand up for justice and fairness. Senator Taylor would like to honor the individuals who put together the Martin Luther King, Jr. program in Milwaukee, which is one of the largest in the nation. It allows young people to come in and show their talent. There has been a large diversity of young people showing their talent across the board. Senator Taylor hopes we will look at some of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speeches and words to help find a different way to proceed as we move forward in this great body.
Senator Hansen, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Yesterday, an event in Green Bay honoring Selma’s 50 years, drew the biggest crowd ever with several hundred people marching across the bridge.
Senator Hansen, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourns, it do so in honor of President Barack Obama, who gives his State of the Union address tonight, trying to move the country forward. May he never be held with a bad reputation because of the color of his skin.
