Announcements, Adjournment Honors and Remarks under
Special Privilege
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of his friend, his congressman, and now his Speaker – the first ever from Wisconsin – Congressman Paul Ryan. Senator Wanggaard met Paul when he volunteered on his first campaign. Even then he recognized his great personality and strong convictions. It has been 17 years since then and he is still the same man of honor, integrity and courage that Senator Wanggaard happily volunteered for many years ago. He will make an exceptional leader, bringing his positive outlook to one of the nation’s most influential roles, and he could not think of anyone better for this important position. Senator Wanggaard would like to thank him for his tireless service to his district, the state, and the country, and he wishes him the best of luck on the incredible journey he has before him. He has made history and he knows he will make a phenomenal Speaker of the House.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Giese Elementary School which is celebrating their 50th Anniversary today. Giese Elementary was named after William C. Giese who served as principal of both Racine High School and Washington Park High School, as well as Superintendent of the Racine Unified School District. His legacy is exemplary, and Giese has expanded upon the excellence he instilled in the schools he oversaw. For two consecutive school years Giese Elementary has been awarded as a Title 1 School of Recognition which awards schools that excel at educating students from low-income families. The phrase “Every Child, Every Minute, Every Day” truly represents the effective leadership and quality instruction of the dedicated staff at Giese Elementary who devote their lives to educating and enriching the lives of students and their families in the community.
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of those who are celebrating their birthdays this November. They are: Bria Grant, Jacques Taylor, Derrick Wimberly, Isaiah Taylor, Brandon Jackson and Beverly Ann Horton.
Senator Bewley, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of the Rice Lake Boys Soccer team who will be playing in the State Soccer Tournament Saturday.  This is their second consecutive year at State and their first time in the Championship game.
Senator Marklein, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Darlington and Boscobel Boy’s Cross Country, who won first and second place respectively at the state finals for division three cross country.
Senator Marklein, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of the Southwestern Girls’ volleyball, who is playing in the state championship tomorrow, Saturday, for division four volleyball.
Senator Harris Dodd, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of the individuals who have lost their lives to violence in Milwaukee this fall. 51 year old Alvin Brown was shot in a car and dropped off at the front door of a police station, where he died. His family is left searching for answers. Alvin Brown was not alone. Nearly twenty other individuals have died in a firearm-related homicide in the last two months. These were sons and brothers; fathers, uncles, and cousins. They had families who loved them, who cared about them, and who will never get a chance to say goodbye. Since we were on this Senate floor last, there have been roughly forty mass shootings across the nation. These are instances where four or more people have been shot at one time.  We have watched the devastation in Oregon. We have seen families torn apart by violence across the nation and in Wisconsin. We have an obligation to stand up. We have an obligation to not contribute to the prevalence of homicides but rather prevent them. We need to work together on creative solutions to end the violence in our communities and to make our neighborhoods safe.
