SJR76,1,2 1Relating to: proclaiming January 2016 as Cervical Health Awareness Month in
2Wisconsin.
SJR76,1,43 Whereas, 79 million Americans currently have Human Papillomavirus (HPV),
4and many of these individuals are not aware that they are infected; and
SJR76,1,65 Whereas, HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer, with nearly 12,000 women
6being diagnosed each year; and
SJR76,1,97 Whereas, HPV is one of the most common infections that can be spread through
8sexual activity, and taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of this infection
9would reduce health care expenditures in the United States; and
SJR76,1,1110 Whereas, HPV can be prevented through the HPV vaccine and this vaccine can
11be found at community health care sources, sometimes at little to no cost; and
SJR76,1,1412 Whereas, regular screening tests, known as Pap screens, can dramatically
13reduce the chance of women getting cervical cancer, as these tests detect abnormal
14cells before these cells become cancerous; and

1Whereas, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services believes most
2deaths from cervical cancer could be prevented through proactive screening and
3follow-up care; and
SJR76,2,54 Whereas, it is in the public interest to promote proactive Pap screens and
5well-woman visits as a way to reduce the occurrence of cervical cancer; and
SJR76,2,76 Whereas, the legislature has an opportunity to join a national awareness effort
7to promote cervical health; now, therefore, be it
SJR76,2,9 8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature
9hereby proclaims January 2016 as Cervical Health Awareness Month in Wisconsin.
