2017 Senate Joint Resolution 46
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming May 5, 2017, as Cri du Chat Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
Whereas, each year in the United States alone, approximately 50 to 60 children are born with 5P Minus Syndrome, also known as Cat Cry Syndrome or Cri du Chat Syndrome; and
Whereas, some common characteristics of Cri du Chat Syndrome at birth are a high pitched cry, low birth weight, poor muscle tone, microcephaly, and potential medical complications; and
Whereas, “5p" is a term used by geneticists to describe a portion of chromosome number five that is missing in these individuals; and
Whereas, children born with this rare genetic defect will most likely require ongoing support from a team of therapists and medical and educational professionals to help the child achieve his or her maximum potential; and
Whereas, the 5P Minus Society of North America, the national support group for individuals with Cri du Chat Syndrome, along with support organizations from around the world are proud to announce that May 1-7, 2017, will be designated as International Cri du Chat Syndrome Awareness Week; and
Whereas, May 5, 2017, has been designated internationally as Cri du Chat Syndrome Day; and
Whereas, the 5P Minus Society serves as a state and national resource to provide comprehensive information and support for families, caregivers, providers, and educators; and
Whereas, there are many individuals with Cri du Chat Syndrome living in Wisconsin who are members of the 5p Minus Society and over 1,200 families in the country; and
Whereas, the goals of Cri du Chat Awareness Week are to end the outdated misinformation given to families when their child receives a diagnosis and to raise awareness for Cri du Chat Syndrome on a large scale; and
Whereas, the 5 P Minus Society's annual national conference is being held this year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 3-6, 2017; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature hereby recognize May 5, 2017, as Cri du Chat Awareness Day in Wisconsin; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to the 5P Minus Society.
