Announcements, Adjournment Honors, and Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Tiffany, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Justin Schroepfer. Justin was a 24 year old resident of Antigo who gave his life to save struggling swimmers off the coast of Lake Superior in Marquette, Michigan. Justin is being honored for his sacrifice by the State Assembly today as a Hometown Hero.
Senator Vukmir, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of the 242nd birthday of the U.S. Navy on June 15. She also adjourned in honor of all who serve and have served in the U.S. Army, particularly her son, Nicholas, who currently serves, and Senators Fitzgerald, Petrowski and Wirch.
Senator Miller, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of the 50th anniversary of the unanimous decision of the US Supreme Court in the case of Loving vs Virginia which held, in words of Chief Justice Earl Warren, that "Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race reside with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the State." At the time of the decision in 1967, 16 states had laws that prohibited members of the white race from marrying a non-white. In most of these states, an interracial marriage that was legal in another state was void in the state with the interracial prohibition and children of such a union were officially bastards. This Supreme Court Loving decision is person to Senator Miller and his wife, who is a second generation Japanese-American. They married in 1968 while he was an Air Force pilot training in Selma, Alabama. Alabama was one of those states that prohibited intermarriage between whites and non-whites. They were grateful then for the decision one year earlier that made their marriage legal in Alabama. They are grateful today that freedom to marry the person you love is the law of our nation.
Senator Craig, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of his parents, William and Carol Craig, who were married on June 14, 1969.

A Korean War veteran, forward observer and bronze star recipient, his passing on Flag Day 1988 was synonymous with his love of country and family.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Jeffery Van Koningsveld, a friend from childhood who passed away this week. He was
active in the Racine community supporting high school and youth sports activities. Jeff also served as the Racine County Democratic Chair. Although they did not always agree politically, he is a friend that will be missed by many.
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of her mother, Lena J. Taylor, whose birthday was June 9'".
Senator Taylor, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Graduates from Schools in her district: Glendale Middle School, Milwaukee Scholars Middle School, Assata and the Milwaukee Seventh Day Adventist School.
