Announcements, Adjournment Honors, and Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Bewley, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Mary H. Rice of Bayfield who died earlier this month from COVID. Mary was born into a family who lived by (Luke 12:48), “To whom much is given, much will be required.” As a direct descendent of Hans Andersen, founder of Andersen windows, Mary lived a life of giving, and her generosity can be seen all over northern Wisconsin. If you have been to Bates Bar, Morty’s, Maggie’s Restaurant, The Egg Toss, or The Club House on Madeline Island you dined or imbibed at a business owned by Mary Rice. She employed hundreds of local residents in family supporting jobs with full benefits, and gave countless teenagers, including my own three daughters, their first jobs. And she was committed to employing members of the Red Cliff tribe. Over time, Mary found local owners for her precious businesses to continue the traditions that made Bayfield thrive, and become “The Best Little Small Town in America”. Her charitable giving was immense. The Madeline Island Music Camp, Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, Mount Ashwabay Ski Hill, CORE Community Services and its affiliate, EN-CORE Resale Shop all received either start-up grants or critical general operating support. In addition she supported the local women’s shelter, food shelf, volunteer fire departments, historical societies, the hospital, free clinics, community theaters, and libraries. And then there were her parties: Northern New Year, the Infamous Black Tie Dinner where every course contained spam, Christmas Tree Decorating Party (she had five trees in her home, the historic Knight House}, Blue Moon Ball Cocktail Hour, Chautauqua End-of-year Debauchery, and more. Her guests included everyone from college presidents to the UPS driver. Mary was gifted at swearing, and made use of it and any time. She loved her family, her friends, painting, her dumb as bricks Airedale terriers, traveling – particularly to her home in Umbria, Italy – and most of all her community. She lived large and well, and Senator Bewley will miss her terribly.
Senator Kapenga, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Senator Erpenbach’s 60th birthday.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Pat Poblete of WisPolitics. Pat is leaving Wisconsin to take a job with ColoradoPolitics. Please join Senator Wanggaard in wishing Pat safe travels and success in his future endeavors.
