1An Act to amend 943.20 (3) (a) and 943.20 (3) (bf) of the statutes;
relating to:
2felony theft of property and providing a penalty.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, theft of property valued at up to $2,500 is a Class A
misdemeanor, and theft of property valued at more than $2,500 but not more than
$5,000 is a Class I felony. Under this bill, theft of property valued at up to $1,000 is
a Class A misdemeanor, and theft of property valued at more than $1,000 but not
more than $5,000 is a Class I felony.
Under current law, the penalty for a Class A misdemeanor is a fine of up to
$10,000 or imprisonment for up to nine months, or both, and the penalty for a Class
I felony is a fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment for up to three years and six
months, or both.
Because this bill creates a new crime or revises a penalty for an existing crime,
the Joint Review Committee on Criminal Penalties may be requested to prepare a
report.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
